Treasue Island Party Theme
“Fifteen men on the dead man's chest - yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!”
Treasure Island novel by Robert Louis Stevenson is undoubtedly one the favorite adventure stories of people around the world. Call the name of Long John Silver – a one leg pirate – to any child or an adult, and it will provoke their imagination with fantasies of a treasure hunting adventure. What could be more exciting then going on a challenging expedition in search of precious treasures? A Treasure Island party theme gives a lot of choices for decorations, costumes, games, and prizes. It could be held inside (as a house party) or outside for a more sporty experience.
Costumes, decorations and other goodies
For costumes, you could pick up some bandannas and eye patches to hand out to your guests. Have color face painting materials on hand. You can paint cool skulls and cross bones on children's faces to get them in the party mood. As the host, you could dress yourself as Long John Silver.
Decorate the room with ropes, empty plastic bottles and containers, and beach balls to give it a pirate ship feel. Get creative and make a custom made map of custom made map of the place where party takes place. One side of a map describes the geography of the setting, such as TV set = volcano, bath tub = ocean, refrigerator = iceberg. The Other side would have special signs/icons like pirates knives, little sacks of money, others treasures, bottles, and a pirate flag. The map will be cut into little pieces and hung all over the place.
Greeting the Guests
A fun way to greet guests is to someone dressed as a pirate and a black dog meet them at the door. They greet arriving guests and offer them to become pirates and go treasure hunting. To become a pirate each guest has to be approved by Long John Silver who is sitting in his chair at the very end of the room full of challenges. To reach John Silver guest has to pass a number of funny tests on his way there – one has to deserve to become a pirate!
There are challenges Long John Silver could ask of his guests before they become pirates. For example one must jump up and touch the ceiling with their eyes closed. If not successful after several attempts, someone would place a wooden board just above the jumper’s head – to help the new pirate to pass the test. Another challenge could be navigate through the reefs. In this challenge, the eyes are covered by bandanna. The guest must navigate in between plastic bottles without touching them.
Becoming a Pirate:
Once, a guest successfully passed his tests and walked to the Silver’s chair, Silver asks him a few tricky questions, such as “What's between the door and window?” (And!) or “What is the shortest month of the year?” (May – 3 letters). After the questions are answered, Long John Silver grants the Pirate Rank to him. The new pirate gets a bandana or a black eye drawn on his face. All the other guest sing:“Fifteen men on the dead man's chest - yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!”
Search the map and Treasure hunt:
After all the new pirates are there, they need to collect all the pieces of the map and put them together again to recreate an original map. Then, find all the hidden treasures according the map. Long John Silver holds all the treasures and announces that pirates must “redeem” the treasures owed to them. He calls a few volunteers, secretly whispers the price to be paid for the treasures (the treasures can candies box, some other goodies, and toys). Volunteers have to pantomime the meaning of the price to the rest of the gang… Once right answers are provided, all the treasures are granted to the pirates!
A Treasure Island party is a great idea for organizing a party for kids and adults. It is easy to be creative and use tons of entertaining and dynamic activities and just have lots of fun!
